A short note on what this site is and how it is built, for anyone who cares about that sort of thing.

The intention was a reading experience first and a website second. Long-form first-person writing asks very little of a design except that it stay out of the way: a measure narrow enough to read comfortably, generous line spacing, a serif that holds up at length, and as little else on the page as the material allows.

Everything visual is defined once, as a set of design tokens, and referenced everywhere else. Colour, type and spacing can be changed wholesale by editing a single file. This was a decision made early and it has been worth the discipline.

Dark mode follows the system preference by default and can be overridden explicitly. The preference is remembered between visits. There is no flash of the wrong theme on load, which took more care than it sounds like it should have.

The site runs on Ghost, self-hosted. Comments are disabled. Nothing here tracks you beyond what the server needs to serve a page.

The writing is the point. The rest of it is scaffolding, and the best thing scaffolding can do is go unnoticed.
